Gift from Empress Dowager, ca. 1900
16 of 28

Bookmark presented by the Empress Dowager Cixi in return for a Christian Bible (shortly after 1900). The translation of the Chinese reads, "Thy kingdom come," which is a line from the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13, Luke 11:2-4).

The note accompanying the bookmark reads, "This bookmark was presented by the Dowager Empress of China to the ladies who gave her a wonderfully bound Bible -- after the Boxer Uprising."
