Drawing from the ship log of the HMS Lion, the vessel that brought Lord Macartney to China in 1793. Macartney’s mission was to set up trade relations between the British and the Chinese empires by presenting British plans to the emperor Qianlong (reigned 1736-1796). The Wason Collection owns almost the entire Macartney manuscript collection, which documents the daily progress of the mission and its subsequent failure.
