Journal of the HMS Lion, 1793
Detail of journal entry

"Remarks on Tuesday, August 13th, 1793. Light breezes and Cloudy, the Winds and Tides so unsettled that we could not move. Observation: If you deepen your water in standing on shore you must be on your Guard, for it denotes either being near some steep rocky point or Reef & if the Ground is hard you may almost depend upon being near danger. These are precautions chiefly for the Night, but they must likewise be attended to in the Day. Keep in from 8 to 14 fathoms with a soft bottom & you may rest assured of safety. At 8 [o'clock] it thundered and lightened very much.

Light airs and Cloudy with rain"
